Cranchi A48 O/B wins the 2026 Design Innovation Award

On 2 October, at the 66th Genoa International Boat Show, the A48 O/B won the category for motor yachts with a hull length of up to 14 m.

The Design Innovation Award is run by Confindustria Nautica and the Genoa International Boat Show. 2026 was its seventh edition, with more than 100 entries. Below are photos of the A48 O/B at the Genoa show.

The jury singled out the A48 O/B's generous hull volumes and the fold-down bulwarks that turn the cockpit into a wide beach area by the water.

The project comes from the Cranchi research team, with naval architecture by Aldo Cranchi and art direction by Christian Grande. A year earlier the A32 won in the category up to 10 m.

Cannes Yachting Festival 2026: two Cranchi world premieres

From 8 to 13 September Cranchi showed almost its entire range in Cannes. The world premieres were the A48 O/B and the A32 O/B, and the new A64 was shown for the first time as a scale model.

The A48 O/B grew out of the A46 concept. She has a separate master cabin, a second cabin with two single berths and a bathroom with a separate shower. The A32 O/B is the outboard version of the A32, with a new swim platform with pods for the engines, two 15-inch Garmin displays and provision for towing waterskis.

The A64 develops the Sessantadue 62 hull for the Aria range, with three cabins and three bathrooms below deck. The yard will present her and the A47 in full in early 2027.

Sergey Rogov and Svetlana Martinez welcomed guests on the Cranchi stand. Sergey filmed the first Russian-language review of the A48 O/B right at the premiere; it is on our YouTube channel.

A64 and A47: new projects in the Aria range

Cranchi has announced two new Aria models. The yard plans the world premieres of the A64 and the A47 for early 2027.

The yard calls the A64 a maxi tender. Her hull develops the Sessantadue 62, with three cabins and three bathrooms below and two Volvo Penta D13 IPS 1350 engines of 1,000 HP each.

The A47 is based on the A46 concept and shares her architecture and interiors with the A48 O/B. She has two Volvo Penta IPS D6 engines of 480 HP each and a garage under the aft sunpad for a tender of up to 2 m.

Metodo Piantedo: how Cranchi builds its yachts

The yard names its build method after its first plant. Aldo Cranchi laid it down when he opened the factory in Piantedo in 1970.

Every part of the yacht is designed in 3D first: the yard sees the finished boat and models her performance before building starts. Production is a line process, and each operation is repeated the same way from hull to hull, so quality does not depend on where a yacht sits in the series.

In 1984 Cranchi was the first in the industry to use a robot to apply gelcoat. According to the yard, it is now the only builder whose robots apply not only gelcoat but also the fibreglass laminate.

Cranchi has two plants. Piantedo Plant 1 builds yachts up to 50 feet and also houses the headquarters and the research centre. Seventy Plant 4 in Rogolo builds yachts from 50 to 80 feet, on a 140,000 m² site with 30,000 m² of covered halls.

The shipyard

Cranchi since 1870: from a workshop on Lake Como to two plants

Six generations, one family and the lake where it all began.

1870. Giovanni Cranchi registers a wooden boat workshop in San Giovanni di Bellagio on Lake Como. The yard counts this as its founding year.

1932. The founder's grandson, also Giovanni Cranchi, moves the workshop to Brienno on the same lake, and the workshop becomes a shipyard.

1970. Aldo Cranchi and Tullio Monzino become partners. The yard moves to Valtellina, to Piantedo, where Aldo Cranchi opens the first plant.

Today the company is run by professional managers while the families remain at the helm, with Paola, Elena and Guido Cranchi and Franco Monzino involved in the business.
